If you’ve ever spent too much time thinking about doing and nothing else, but you just won’t get around to doing whatever that is, maybe what I’ve done could help you: doing nothing.

The Issue..?

Have you felt like you’re just not doing enough of whatever you want to do? I’ve been feeling like that for a while, if you’ve read recent posts you may notice it’s a recurring topic in some way or another. But something clicked this week and I’ve been thinking about it a lot. I’ve felt like consuming more and more and I feel like that has helped me focus a bit more on what I want to do.

But I keep asking myself, what do I actually want to do? I’m not completely sure.

For as long as I have surrounded myself with creative people I’ve noticed that creativity has nothing to do with the actually doing of things, but with the exploring and curiosity. Creation is just the outcome.

There’s some times in life when we just want to do, and do, and do. And sometimes we just avoid consuming because it may influence what we’re doing in a way we “don’t want it to”, without really knowing what the result would be. This has been stuck in my mind at least the past couple weeks.

What I’ve Been Doing

As the title for this posts explains without any intention for click baiting, I’ve been consuming a lot of what I want to do: Exploring with non-selective curiosity.

This has helped me take my mind off of the idea that I’m not doing stuff. And don’t get me wrong, the idea is still there, what has changed is that I feel like my very own ideas and thoughts have started to take a clearer shape themselves, I’ve felt more inspired instead of frustrated. It feels like starting to find balance even though I’m not fully there.

To be clear about what I mean, let me give you a very simple example.

The idea of making new music has been on my mind always but I sometimes feel stuck in my own ideas and trying to figure them out before I actually get myself to work on them. This has hindered my musical output and I’ve pretty much written nothing new in at least two months. But not only this, I felt like I’m achieving no progress even when I work on it, which frustrates me A LOT!

So where’s the balance I was talking about? Well, funny enough, I’ve found it in taking a break from forcing me to work on stuff I haven’t figured out, and instead of making music I’ve gone on a music listening deep dive, finding new artists, new music from artists I’ve known, but mostly allowing myself to enjoy the process of getting inspired by all of it.

What’s Next?

The only thing left to do is take it all in, process it, give myself a chance to digest my own ideas and thoughts, and then make music. It’s not about always making something new, but of making the process feel like something that may surprise you even though you’ve done it a thousand times.

So yes, if you feel like you’ve done nothing in a while, I would suggest doing nothing about it and allow yourself to experience new stuff before getting back to it. Don’t look at it as abandoning the project, but of refreshing your mind so you get better at it.

Consume new things and then create your own.

Si alguna vez has pasado mucho tiempo pensando en hacer y nada más, pero simplemente no logras dedicar tiempo a realmente trabajar en eso, tal vez lo que he hecho pueda ayudarte: hacer nada.

El Problema..?

¿Has sentido que no haces suficiente de lo que quieres hacer? Yo me he sentido así por un rato ya, y si has leído algún artículo reciente, habrás notado que ha sido un tema recurrente de una forma u otra. Pero, algo hizo click esta semana y le he estado dando muchas vueltas en la cabeza. He sentido la necesidad por consumir más y más, y creo que eso me ha ayudado a enfocarme en lo que quiero hacer.

Pero sigo preguntándome, ¿qué es lo que realmente quiero hacer? No estoy completamente seguro aún.

Desde que me he rodeado de gente creativa, he notado que la creatividad no tiene nada que ver con el querer hacer cosas, sino con la exploración y la curiosidad. La creación es simplemente el resultado.

Hay ocasiones en la vida en las que sólo queremos hacer, y hacer, y hacer. A veces simplemente evitamos consumir porque no queremos que nuestro trabajo se vea influenciado, incluso sin saber cuál sería el resultado. Esto ha estado en mi mente el menos un par de semanas.

Lo Que He Hecho

Como dice el título de este post, sin intención de ser click bait, he estado consumiendo mucho de lo que yo quiero hacer: Explorando con curiosidad no selectiva.

Esto me ha ayudado a sacar de mim mente la idea de que no estoy haciendo suficiente. No me mal interpreten, el pensamiento sigue ahí, pero lo que ha cambiado es que siento cómo mis ideas y pensamientos son más claros y van tomando forma, me he sentido más inspirado y menos frustrado. Se siente como estar encaminado a un balance, aunque aún no lo haya conseguido del todo.

Para ser más claro, permítanme darles un ejemplo simple.

La idea de hacer música nueva siempre está en mi cabeza y, a veces, siento que me atoro en mis propias ideas y tratando de entenderlas antes de realmente trabajar con ellas. Esto ha obstaculizado mi producción de música y no he escrito nada nuevo en prácticamente dos meses. ¡Pero no sólo esto, sino que también he sentido que no he progresado incluso cuando me he sentado a trabajar, y esto me ha frustrado MUCHO!

Entonces, ¿en dónde está el balance del que hablaba? Pues, aunque pueda ser algo increíble, lo he encontrado en tomarme un break de forzarme a trabajar en cosas que no he entendido por completo y, en lugar de hacer música, me he sumergido profundamente en escuchar nueva música, descubrir nuevos artistas, nueva música de artistas que ya conocía. Pero más que nada, permitiéndome disfrutar el proceso de inspirarme por todo esto.

¿Qué Sigue?

Lo único que queda por hacer es internalizar, procesar, y darme la oportunidad de digerir mis propias ideas y pensamientos, después haré la música. No se trata de siempre hacer cosas nuevas, sino de hacer que el proceso se sienta como algo que puede sorprendernos incluso cuando sea algo que ya hemos hecho miles de veces.

Así que si, si sienten que han logrado poco o nada en un rato, les sugiero entonces hacer nada y permitirse experimentar nuevas cosas antes de volver. No lo vean como un abandono de sus proyectos, sino como de refrescar su mente y mejorar.

Consuman nuevas cosas y después creen las suyas.
